The Entrance

Alex McCord enters a room with the desperate energy of someone who rehearsed the entrance seventeen times in the mirror and remains unconvinced by the execution. There is effort, darling, so much effort, and the effort itself becomes its own charm, the way a baby deer learning to walk is charming despite the constant threat of collapse. She is Bohemian in the way only a woman who reached Brooklyn before it was fashionable can be: genuinely countercultural, slightly awkward, and constitutionally incapable of the Upper East Side rituals she so clearly coveted.

The Estate Appraisal

The Cobble Hill townhouse, a multi-floor renovation narrated with Taj Mahal intensity, was her domain and told us everything. While the other wives lunched uptown, Alex raised bilingual children and adored Simon, whose devotion to fashion-forward menswear bordered on the heroic. Together they were reality television’s most endearing odd couple, so in love and so out of step that watching them navigate Ramona Singer’s world resembled nature footage of a species in the wrong habitat. The later psychology degree was the most Alex move imaginable: she went and studied why people behave as they do.

The Verdict

Alex shall be placed in The Brooklyn Reading Room—a book-lined, slightly crooked parlor in the Sovereign Estate where the renovation is permanently underway, the tea is herbal, and every guest is being quietly analyzed. She wanted the Upper East Side and built something better without noticing. It is, I confess, the most honest accident in this registry.
